Brand Yourself As A Writer: Guest Blogging

I have a confession to make. My name is Denise, and I am a writer. There, I have said it, and I no longer have to be a closet writer, as I have been for most of my life. Though I have always had a “real” job (sometimes two) I have always taken a special interest in writing. When I was young, poems and word origins were my passion. At this stage in my life, I love to write stories about people, or articles that can be helpful to people.

Where can you find writing work?

I created the blog Write and Get Paid, and offer frequent advice, links, and tips to people who are interested in learning how to make a living by writing. Because of my blog, people ask me daily where a writer can find work. My answer to that question is literally, everywhere! The internet has opened up tremendous opportunities for writers. Millions of companies discover the power of internet marketing daily, and each needs fresh content for websites and blogs on a regular basis.

Why should someone hire you?

An important question you need to ask yourself is: Why would someone want to hire me as a writer? You must be able to prove that you are a good writer! Building your own personal brand is vital. To be a good writer, surely you have to write. In fact, the more you write, the better you will become, IF you take the time to read over, review, and proofread and edit your work. However, a stunning piece of work does you no good if no one reads it.

Build your Proof

Posting your work on your own blog (you do have one, right?) is a good start. If you do not yet have a blog, I suggest you go immediately to Blogger or WordPress and start one, today. Neither of those platforms is terribly difficult, and you can quickly get online. Your blog can serve as your online home base, and will be where you direct readers.

You will want to write at least five to ten articles on current topics, and post those that are relevant on your blog. You will also want to add those to a zip file of sample articles that you can submit when inquiring about writing work.

Publicize your Work

Now that you have a small base of work to build upon, you will want to venture into cyberspace. It is time to send out some emails and get some guest posts published on other blogs. Though it may sound intimidating, most bloggers welcome offers of relevant guest posts. It is difficult to think of fresh ideas to blog about consistently, and a different voice is often energizing.

Be sure that your guest posts are relevant to the blogs that you approach. This means do not offer a cooking post to a sports blog, or an SEO post to a kid’s site, unless there is some connection. With the latest Google changes, bloggers are leery of off-topic posts because it appears they might affect PR (page ranking). If you are a new writer, PR may be foreign to you. Just keep in mind that you want to guest post on blogs with lots of traffic and good PR. The more people that actually read your post, the better!

Facebook is another venue that can drive lots of traffic to your blog, and it is excellent for online selling. Oh, and by the way, this article itself is a guest post!
